Our History

The Italian Genealogical Society of America began in 1994 as a collaborative effort encouraged by our founder Jonathan Galli of Cranston, Rhode Island. Jonathan was a longtime genealogist who worked at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) in Boston. When he and some other very key people realized that there was such an interest in Italian genealogy, they began IGSA. The first Board of Directors included Arthur Santoro, Marcia Melynk, Lawrence Izzi, Jim Forti, Joan and Don Fields, Joan D’Amico, and Gina Santoro. The purpose of this organization was and still is to learn how to research, document, and preserve our Italian Heritage and Culture and share it with those who desire to find their Italian roots.

May we continue to grow and learn about our Italian Families and Culture!
